The Best Country Clubs in the Pittsburgh Area

April 05, 2019 | Regis McQuaide

The Best Country Clubs in the Pittsburgh AreaIn addition to award-winning restaurants and successful sports teams, Pittsburgh is also home to dozens of excellent country clubs. Whether you’re interested in playing golf or tennis, enjoying fine dining or making new friends, a country club membership offers plenty of benefits. If you’ve been considering joining a club, you’ll want to take a look at these four impressive local country clubs.

Oakmont Country Club

Oakmont, PA

The Oakmont Country Club is the club to join if you’re a serious golfer. Ranked fifth in the country by Golf Digest, the club has hosted nine U.S. Opens, two U.S. Women’s Opens, five U.S. Amateur Championships and three PGA Championships. It will be the site of the U.S. Amateur Championships in 2021 and the U.S. Open in 2025.

Sloping greens, narrow fairways and deep bunkers make course play challenging for even the most accomplished golfers. Luckily, you’ll have ample opportunity to improve your score if you become a member of Oakmont. The club also offers tennis, an outdoor pool, a dining room and pool grill.

The prestigious country club’s membership committee is extremely selective and turns down a large percentage of applicants. Fortunately, the Pittsburgh area offers many other clubs that may be perfect for you and your family if joining Oakmont is a long shot.

St. Clair Country Club

Upper St. Clair, PA

Recognized as one of the Top 100 Private Country Clubs in America in 2003, 2006 and 2012, St. Clair Country Club occupies 265 acres in Pittsburgh’s South Hills. The club offers an 18-hole championship golf course with immaculately groomed greens and a network of water hazards that increase the complexity of the course.

A terrace 9-hole course provides the ideal option for those days when you just don’t have enough time to play 18 holes. The club also offers a short game practice facility, driving range, golf shop and indoor hitting range.

If you’re not a golfer, you’ll enjoy spending lazy summer days around the pool complex, which features a large outdoor pool and a separate children’s pool. Other amenities include private dining facilities, a fitness center and paddle tennis courts.

Fox Chapel Golf Club

Fox Chapel, PA

The Fox Chapel Golf Club strives to offer an exceptional experience for everyone in your family. The club has won a Distinguished Club award for providing outstanding membership services and was also named one of the Top 100 Best Classic Courses in 2015 by Golfweek Magazine.

The Seth Raynor 18-hole golf course offers elevated, multi-tiered greens that encourage creative shots. Golf and tennis lessons are available for both adults and children. Inside the historic clubhouse, you’ll find fine and casual dining facilities, comfortable locker rooms, a golf shop and a fitness facility that offers views of the golf course.

During the warmer months of the year, members enjoy the L-shaped pool, baby pool, snack stand, playground, and Har-Tru and platform tennis courts. Fox Chapel also offers a Shooting Lodge and hosts straight trap, sub-trap and international trap shooting events.

Pittsburgh Field Club

Pittsburgh, PA

One of the oldest clubs in the Pittsburgh area, the Field Club began as a 19th century cricket club. As interest in cricket waned, the Field Club embraced golf, a sport that became increasingly popular in the late 1800s.

Today, the club features an 18-hole course that has been renovated multiple times by the top golf course architects, including Robert Trent Jones, A.W. Tillinghast and Craig Shreiner. Ringed by mature trees, the course offers plenty of elevation changes and an elevator that takes golfers from the 17th green to the 18th tee.

Other activities offered by the Field Club include swimming, platform tennis, tennis, fishing, bowling, duplicate bridge, skeet shooting, and formal and informal dining facilities.

When you can’t make it to the country club, an in-home recreation room can help your entire family stay active. Depending on your preferences, your new space can include golf, baseball, hockey and other simulators, a putting green, fitness center, bar and TV room.
