Quality comes at a price, whether you’re buying a new car or remodeling your home. Inexpensive products and finishes may look perfectly fine initially, but they won’t stand the test of time. Whether you’re planning to remodel your Shadyside, PA, kitchen, renovate your Mt. Lebanon basement, or tackle another home remodeling project, you’ll pay more for high-quality versions of these building products.
Cabinets and Countertops
The kitchen cabinets on display in big box home stores may seem impressive in the store, but you might be disappointed if you add them to your kitchen remodel. Manufacturers add a thin layer of veneer to mid-range cabinet choices to improve their appearance. Although these cabinets might look just like solid wood options, they may show wear in just a year or two. Unfortunately, if the veneer wears away, you won’t be able to restore the appearance of your cabinets by refinishing them.
High-end custom cabinets are made with solid wood of your choosing and include doweled frames, dovetailed drawers, high-performance doors and other features that ensure they’ll look good and function properly for years to come. They cost more, but they also last much longer. Custom cabinets are ideal if your old home has unusual dimensions. The cabinets can be constructed to fit any space, unlike stock cabinets that are only available in limited sizes.
The best countertop materials also tend to be a little pricy. Although you’ll pay more for granite, solid surface, quartz, soapstone or glass, these materials add beauty to your kitchen and won’t rot, fall apart or swell when exposed to water like some laminate or butcher block countertops.
Inexpensive paints have several drawbacks, including:
- Poor Coverage: Cheap paints use large pigments made from clay, while high-end paints contain smaller titanium dioxide pigments that offer better coverage. If your remodeler uses cheap paint, multiple coats will be required, which may not offer any savings in the end.
- Durability Issues: Inexpensive paints are made with cheap resins that don’t penetrate surfaces as effectively as high-quality versions. As a result, walls painted with cheap paint will need to be recoated sooner.
- Streaks and Other Issues: Expensive paints are thicker, offer more consistent coverage and don’t show brush strokes.
Do you want built-shelving, molded paneling or a one-of-a-kind staircase? These features must be created from scratch by expert carpenters and craftsmen. Additionally, many homeowners who choose custom woodwork prefer more expensive types of woods that add to the price of the renovation. Custom woodwork enhances the beauty of your home, but you’ll pay extra for the materials and the time and skill it takes to complete the project.
High-End Bathroom Features
Soaking tubs, steam showers, waterproof sound systems and other features turn your bathroom into a luxurious oasis tend to be a little expensive and require more skill to install. In some cases, changes to plumbing and electrical systems may be required, which will raise the cost of your remodel.
